Inter's Jira Cloud Migration Saves $200K a Year

With Atlassian Cloud Migration, Inter moves closer to its efficiency target and saves $200,000 a year

THE CLIENT

Inter is one of the largest banks in Latin America and one of the first fully digital banks in the world. Founded in 1994 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, the company started out as the financial arm of the MRV Engenharia group.

Over nearly two decades, the business built a solid foundation before making its defining move in 2015: launching one of the region's first fully digital bank accounts, a milestone that cemented its reputation for innovation.

As one of the first fully cloud-based financial apps in Latin America — with its entire customer experience delivered through its app — Inter has always invested heavily in technology and information security.

That team now numbers around 1,300 people, more than a third of the company's total workforce, and represents the area where the company invests the most.

In short, Inter isn't just a bank. It's a financial super-app in the middle of a brand repositioning, with a corporate strategy built around technology.

That vision reflects Inter's evolution into a technology company whose core product is the super-app itself, built to offer far more than traditional banking, including digital accounts, shopping, travel booking, credit cards, and investments.

THE CHALLENGE

To further cement its position as a financial super-app, one of Inter's key strategic decisions was migrating its Atlassian tools to the cloud, a move that saved the company roughly $200,000 a year in operating costs. That relentless drive for efficiency helped Inter grow from 2 million customers in 2018 to more than 30 million today, a number expected to double within a few years.

Given its strategic importance to the company, this infrastructure carries heavy operational demand, creating real challenges around staffing and cost. Inter's technology development team alone fields around 90,000 requests a year for changes to deployment services.

One defining feature of Inter's app architecture is that it's componentized: teams can fix or update individual parts of the app without affecting the rest. Given that need, the bank considered building a highly customized internal setup for its digital environment. That's when migrating to the cloud emerged as the better path, one that would let Inter tap into the investments and innovation already available there.

"Last year, we kicked off a major efficiency initiative, and the migration to Jira Cloud was driven mainly by two factors: the efficiency gains, which let us cut the heavy overhead of managing our own data centers and manage licensing more effectively, and innovation, staying closer to the new features Atlassian is constantly rolling out."

Once the decision was made, Inter had to weigh the challenges of migrating a system this complex, carrying this much data.

The central question was how to execute the migration securely, on schedule, without runaway costs, and without disrupting the experience of 30 million customers. To ensure a smooth transition without compromising the customer experience, Inter chose

THE SOLUTIONS

Inter estimates that migrating from Jira Data Center to Jira Cloud saved the company roughly $200,000 a year, a significant number, especially in 2023, a challenging year for the financial sector.

The partnership with e-Core also freed up the infrastructure team that had been dedicated to managing and maintaining that environment, redirecting them to build new products and services for the bank's customers.

The new setup also gave development teams far greater autonomy, with team managers working in a more integrated, coordinated way to centralize processes and keep different areas aligned.

That was key to helping the various technology squads move faster and collaborate more productively.

The efficiency gains from the migration were a critical step toward Inter's ambitious "60/30/30" target: growing to 60 million customers by 2027, achieving a 30% gain in operational efficiency, and delivering a 30% return on capital, generating increasingly sustainable returns for its stakeholders.

THE CHALLENGES

  • Heavy data center management overhead, with high operating costs
  • Deep interdependency between teams and departments, with demands concentrated among a small group of administrators
  • Keeping the company current with industry best practices and emerging technologies
  • Efficiently coordinating a large, cross-functional workforce
  • Maintaining a high standard of service quality while sustaining continuous growth

THE RESULTS

  • Rollout of Jira Software, Jira Service Management, and Confluence across Inter's 1,300-person IT and Information Security organization
  • Lower costs across equipment, software, staffing, space, and licensing
  • Greater team autonomy, driving faster processes and a broad efficiency gain
  • A new set of data management features and access to expertise from a globally recognized partner
  • Stronger cross-team integration through team managers, and better allocation of people toward customer-facing project development
  • Positive user feedback and a steadily expanding service portfolio

"We ran a major efficiency initiative at Inter. Jira was one of the tools selected as part of that effort, and we saved roughly $200,000 by migrating to Jira Cloud. That matters a lot, especially given how tough 2023 was for the financial market. For growing tech-driven companies, every dollar counts."

CONCLUSION

For Inter, staying at the forefront of cloud service management is essential to remaining a leader in digital financial services, a market where competition is already fierce and only getting tougher.

According to Brazil's Fintech Association (ABFintechs), the country is home to nearly 1,500 active fintech companies. Our solutions have helped Inter keep delivering on that value for its customers.

"Speed of delivery is what Inter customers expect, on top of quality of service. Once Inter transformed its internal processes, we were able to resolve customer issues much faster. We have a 24/7 observability team watching dashboards around the clock, with automated alerts, managing everything in real time, a factor that also shapes how relevant a financial institution is in the world of open finance."

There is a belief that runs deep inside IT operations teams: a noisy environment is a healthy one. If alerts are firing constantly, if tickets are piling up, if the on-call rotation is getting hit at 2am, that means monitoring is working. The tools are catching things. I understand where this comes from. In the early days of observability, silence was genuinely suspicious. A quiet dashboard often meant a gap in coverage, a misconfigured rule, something important slipping through undetected. So teams learned to treat volume as proof, and that instinct stayed long after the environment around it changed. But noise is not proof that monitoring is working. In most cases, it is proof that something upstream was never fixed. Automation at the wrong end When alert volume becomes unsustainable, the response is almost always the same. Leadership looks at the backlog (a thousand tickets a day, engineers buried, SLAs slipping) and reaches for automation at the remediation end of the pipeline: AI agents plugged into monitoring tools, scripts that fire when incident X arrives, routing logic that moves tickets faster. These are reasonable responses to an unreasonable situation, but they treat cost rather than cause. Most of those alerts should never have been generated. Processing them faster does not change why they exist.
